Sierra Palms - El Yunque Puerto Rico Vacation Rental

Click here for Special Events and Photos

Sierra Palms is a new rainforest vacation rental, perched high in the mountains of El Yunque Puerto Rico.  This unique house for rent offers three bedrooms, three bathrooms, and a spacious terrace with a stunning view overlooking the rain forest ("el bosque"), the Caribbean Sea, and the island of Vieques.  Right on our property, a private trail leads down to the swirling waterfall pools of the Rio Blanco, where guests can bathe and play in complete privacy.

Each bedroom of the Sierra Palms vacation rental villa has its own bathroom with shower. The eat-in kitchen is fully equipped, and many of our guestselect to dine outside on the terrace. The master bedroom has a queen and two twin beds. Bedroom # 2 has a queen bed and bedroom # 3 has two twin beds. There is also a queen-sized futon in the living room.  The house can easily sleep 8-10 adults.  The villa is also equipped with satelite T.V. This is a perfect getaway spot for families and small groups seeking elegant yet affordable lodging in the Puerto Rican rain forest.

A walled garden lies between the rental house and the road, which dead-ends at the entrance to the El Yunque rainforest proper, half a mile beyond Sierra Palms.  The master bedroom, the kitchen, and bedroom number two all open to a covered terrace with a wonderful view across a narrow rainforest valley of the Caribbean National Forest and the Rio Prieto Falls.  Guests have told us the last time they were in such a setting they were in faraway Bali.

Owned by the mother-son team of Matthew and Marianne Kavanaugh, Sierra Palms is a natural extension of the Casa Cubuy Ecolodge just up the road. Matthew and Marianne have been in the B&B industry since the mid-1990's, when they started El Yunque's premier bed and breakfast, Casa Cubuy. While Sierra Palms does have its own spacious, well-equipped kitchen, guests at Sierra Palms are welcome to sign up for breakfasts at Casa Cubuy for $10 per person, and for dinners at $18.50 per person.  Guests at Sierra Palms are also welcome to hike the private rain forest trails at Casa Cubuy, which lead down to the Cubuy and Sabana Rivers.

Nearby Activities:

Hiking- Certainly the most popular activity among the visitors to our area of the El Yunque rainforest is hiking.  Our private trail and rain forest pools are only the start of the hiking opportunities nearby.  The most popular hike is the guided rainforest lecture/hike with Robin Phillips, a forester originally from Rhode Island.  Robin has owned and operated a 12-acre exotic fruit farm here in the Cubuy area El Yunque for the past 27 years, and amazes everyone on his day-long hikes with the depth and scope of his knowledge of the area and its flora and fauna.

Waterfalls and Swimming - Apart from our private pools on the Rio Blanco, there are four other rivers with rainforest pools right here on our side of the El Yunque national forest.  The Cubuy, Sabana, Icaco and Prieto rivers all offer great swimming, hiking and relaxation opportunities.

Birdwatching - Casa Cubuy and Sierra Palms both are known in the birdwatching community as great places for birdwatchers eager to see some of the rare and interesting species that live in our side of the rain forest.  From the Puerto Rican lizard cuckoo to sharp-shinned hawks to the Puerto Rican screech owl, Sierra Palms offers a terrific vantage point to spy out birds both on the wing and perched in trees.  It's also a very convenient base camp for birdwatching hikes into El Yunque.

Taino Petroglyphs - Our rainforest setting is host to a number of pre-Columbian Taino indian petroglyphs, etched into the enormous boulders scattered up and down various rivers in our valley.  Depicting spirits and animals, these ceremonial rock carvings were created more than 500 years ago.

Beaches - Because of our location on the Eastern end of Puerto Rico, Sierra Palms offers easy access to a great number of beaches, all within a thirty-minute drive.  In order, from north to south, they are

Luquillo - There are four separate beaches in Luquillo; La Selva (surfing), La Pared (surfing), Playa Azul (snorkeling and bathing), and the Balneario, or public beach (swimming, child-friendly, bathing and food facilities).

Fajardo - Seven Seas Balneario in Las Croabas, Fajardo is a great place for snorkeling.  There are even underwater caves in the reefs off the beach.  In addition, the weather at this balneario is drier than Luquillo.
-The cays off of Las Croabas offer gorgeous destinations for snorkeling or beachgoing day-trips.

Naguabo - The fishing village of Hucares, Naguabo has a picturesque "malecon," or seaside promenade, with numerous seafood restaurants across the road.  A lovely view across the Caribbean, the mountains of southeastern Puerto Rico, and Cayo Santiago ("Monkey Island")

Just south of Hucares is Tropical Beach, a popular hangout spot for families.  It's a long beach bordered by a deep layer of coconut palms and sandy roads, perfect for tying up a hammock or two between some palms and taking it easy for the day.  Again, there are numerous seafood shacks across the road from Tropical Beach.

Humacao - Punta Santiago is another balneario, or public beach, in the municipality of Humacao, south of Naguabo.  The balneario has a long beach with views across to Cayo Santiago, Vieques, and south across the mountains of Yabucoa.  Perhaps most importantly, the balneario has a waterpark designed specifically for small children, sitting right next to the beach.

Yabucoa - Palmas de Lucia beach is south of the sprawling Palmas del Mar resort, at the end of Highway 53.  Not a fantastic swimming beach, but it has a gorgeous view.  Over to the right of the beach is a tall cliff with enormous boulders strewn about on top of it.  Pelicans and frigate birds love this beach.

The Fajardo "Biobay" - One of the top bioluminescent bays in the world - the Fajardo, Puerto Rico Biobay - is an easy drive from Sierra Palms.  Tour operators guide groups of visitors in kayaks down a narrow mangrove channel to an inland lagoon inside Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Preserve.  Once in the lagoon, folks jump overboard into the water, which lights up when disturbed.  It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience, not to be missed during your stay at Sierra Palms.

Ferries to Vieques and Culebra - Sierra Palms is also a convenient jumping-off point for side trips out to the "baby islands" of Vieques and Culebra.  The ferry dock in Fajardo is only a 30-minute drive from us, and there is never any traffic like one encounters leaving San Juan.

Come visit Sierra Palms and discover why we stand head and shoulders above other Puerto Rico vacation rentals.
